European cars are mesmerizing and among my favorites are the: BMW 507, XJ13 Jaguar, and the Mercedes – Benz 300SL “Gullwing”. In this post, I’ll tell you why I’m in love with these cars. First off why am I so crazy for European cars? They stand out! Not just in quality and functionality (there’s also some not so good ones, every market has them) but it’s also the design. It’s almost like they have no boundaries when it comes to the design and execution of these cars. Anyone melts at their sight.
The BMW 507 is one of the most beautiful sports car in history (to me at least). This roadster is the best example of the resurgence of the brand after the Second World War. He used a 3.2-liter V8 engine with 150 HP. This power transmitted to the rear axle through a ZF four speed. Only 253 units were manufactured at the time so its price then and now is extremely high.
The XJ13 Jaguar was the company’s commitment to participate in Le Mans in the mid- 60s, but the project was never finished and never took part in the French test. In 1965, this prototype was built with an aluminum body and centrally 5.0 engine, placed in 12-V cylinder. Two circumstances influenced negatively for the XJ13 not pass the prototype stage: one, the merger of Jaguar with BMC in 1966 – the new partners were not very keen to continue with the project- and the other: the fact that Ford had a 7-liter engine in the GT40 leaving the Jaguar 5.0 nigh obsolete. Regardless of this tragedy, the build and elegance of this car is magnificent and it’s often ranked as one of the top 10, 20 & 50 best cars in the history of the company and transportation.
Mercedes – Benz 300SL “Gullwing”(1955-1957 ): It’s system of opening doors -in the form of gull’s wings, the design and performance, and its history make the 300SL one of the most recognized and valued cars for good in the history of cars. The Widow maker, it’s the nickname given to this car in Germany and responding to the number of widows left behind an accident with it, was one of the first supercars ever manufactured. The first design was the coupe version but the convertible was manufactured later as well.
